It is with a heavy heart that we report two Line of Duty Deaths in Kansas City, Missouri, IAFF Local 42. Fire Apparatus Operator Larry Leggio and Firefighter John Mesh.
Both members passed away as a result of injuries suffered during a structural collapse while fighting a three-alarm fire in Kansas City's Old Northeast district on Monday, October 12, 2015. Larry Leggio was a 17-year veteran and John Mesh was an 11-year veteran of the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department. Both men are from a family of Kansas City Fire Fighters.
Larry Leggio, 43, leaves a wife, mother and family. John Mesh, 39, leaves a wife, four daughters, mother and family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
Two other members of IAFF Local 42, Fire Apparatus Operator Chris Anderson and Firefighter Dan Werner were hospitalized but are expected to be released and make a full recovery.

Larry J. Leggio, age 43, was a Kansas City, Missouri Firefighter who died tragically in the line of duty on October 12, 2015.
Larry was born on June 25, 1972, to Angelo and Mary Lynn (Donnici) Leggio. He is survived by his wife, Missy (Gentile) Leggio; mother, Mary Lynn Leggio; brother, Joe Mike Leggio (Michelle); sister, Angela Emmick; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joe and Marcia Gentile; brother-in-law, Tim Gentile (Trina); and sister-in-law, Tina Gentile. He was the beloved uncle to Nina and Nicole Emmick, Joseph and Marissa Leggio, and Oriana, Grayson, Brandlyn and Noelle Gentile. He also leaves behind his little buddy Fritzy, as well as many extended family members and countless friends and fellow firefighters. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Angelo L. Leggio.
Larry was a 17 year veteran of the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department. From the time he was a little boy, Larry dreamed of following in his Father’s footsteps as a firefighter. That dream became a reality in May of 1998. He started his career at Station number 23, located in Old Northeast, where Larry was born and raised.
Larry was passionate in life and he brought that passion to his beloved fire department. He loved riding his Harley and was active in supporting charity rides such as the one for his longtime friend and fire department brother, Bill Dady. Larry most recently participated in a ride to Colorado Springs to support the Fallen Firefighters Memorial. Larry’s other passion was his family, especially his soul-mate Missy who he married in 2011.
Visitation will be 2-7 p.m. Sunday, October 18, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1357 NE 42nd Terr., Kansas City, MO 64116. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, October 19, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, followed by burial in the Legacy Garden of Mount Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to a fund to support the fallen firefighters families c/o IAFF Local 42, 6320 Manchester Ave., Suite 42A, Kansas City, MO 64133. A public memorial service, hosted by IAFF Local 42, will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO.

John V. Mesh

John V. Mesh, age 39, was a Kansas City, Missouri Firefighter/EMT who died tragically in the line of duty on October 12, 2015
John was born August 8, 1976, to Michael Joseph and Barbara (Taylor) Mesh. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Felicia (Mora) Mesh; daughters, Adriana Nichole (17), Alyssa Marie (16), Alexandria Jolynn (13), Alicia Lynette (10); mother, Barbara K. Mesh; brothers, Michael T. Mesh (Sherri), Mark A. Mesh (Rosealyn), James J. Mesh (Laura); sisters, Jena Oliver (Todd), Christine Kimzey (Brian), Sherri Caponetto (Ross); father-in-law and mother-in-law, Felix and Mella Mora; brother-in-law, Anthony Mora (Tina); and sister-in-law, Staci Reed (Jake). He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews as well as many extended family members, friends, and fellow firefighters. He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Joseph Mesh; and brother, Joseph Anthony “Tony” Mesh.
John was everything to his family and they were most important to him. He was extremely proud of his girls and was a very active participant in all their sports, functions and events. He was an avid hunter and was passing this tradition to his daughters. He was a graduate of Holy Cross Grade School and St. Mary’s High School.
John was a 13 year veteran of the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department, and was passionate about his career as a firefighter/EMT. He was serving with his fellow firefighters on Pumper 10 when he was called for his Last Alarm in Old Northeast.
Visitation will begin with the Rosary at 2 p.m. and continue until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 3736 S. Lee’s Summit Rd., Independence, MO 64055. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 21, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, followed by burial in the Legacy Garden of Mount Olivet Cemetery.
