It is with deepest regret and sorrow to report the line-of-duty death of David Earl Cheney, Jr, Captain of Gladstone, MO Fire Department.
David, 54, of KC, MO passed away on Thursday May 22, 2014 surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born August 13, 1959 to David, Sr. and Trudy Cheney. David joined the KC Police Dept in 1980 and later joined the Gladstone Dept. of Public Safety as a police officer/firefighter. He was officially assigned to the Fire Division in the late 90’s and worked his way to retire after a 28 year career as a Captain. David also served for the Smithville Area FPD as an Assistant Chief/Fire Inspector. David instructed and mentored countless young men and women both in the fire service and in life. He was a very involved father to his 4 sons’ and devoted husband, taking his family on many trips, fishing, hunting, and camping. His love for travel led his family to see many places. David was a long time, very involved scout leader. He was an avid sports nut.
David was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Donna (Penrod); 4 sons, Jason (Abigail), Eric, Joshua, and Jeffrey (Hillary); his parents; brother, Mark (Tracey); sister, Susan (John) Edgar; and a grandchild due this winter.
Memorial services will be 9:30 AM Friday May 30, 2014 at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Liberty, MO with inurnment to follow at White Chapel Memorial Gardens. The Family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday at White Chapel Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society; Suite 202, Cloverleaf Build. 1 6811 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Shawnee Mission, KS 66202.
